Why I Started Good Drift

I'm Ben Johnson, the founder of Good Drift.

I'm based in Austin, Texas, where I spend most of my time chasing bass and redfish, with the occasional trout, carp, and panfish mixed in. I've traveled a bit to fish different waters, and I've got a map on the wall in my office covered in pins marking places I want to fish someday. The list keeps growing faster than I can check things off. That's probably not going to change.

I built Good Drift because I kept having the same conversation with guides, shop owners, lodges, and fishing brands. They were great at what they did, but they were facing the same challenges: not enough time to handle every part of the business and uncertainty about what marketing efforts were actually worth their attention.

I knew I could help. I've spent years working in branding, websites, content, and marketing, and I have a pretty good understanding of the fishing industry and the people in it.

The longer I've done this work, the clearer the why has become. When a guide's business grows, they take more people fishing. When more people fish, more people fall in love with rivers, coastlines, and wild places—and the reasons to protect them. In a small way, the work I do here connects to something bigger than marketing, and that matters to me.

Good Drift works with a small number of fly fishing businesses at a time. We don't jump between industries or chase whatever project comes along. Fly fishing is the community we know, the businesses we enjoy helping, and the only industry we serve.

You shouldn't have to figure all of this out on your own. I'm here to help simplify the process, answer questions, and do the work alongside you.
